Progym #5 Encomium/Invective/Comparison/Characterization
Two days per week
Prerequisite :Progym #4 Refutation/Confirmation/Common Topic
After a review of the previous stages: Fable, Narrative, Chreia/Maxim, Refutation/Confirmation, Common Topic, this class will begin the
Encomium/Invective/Comparison stages This stage is primarily concerned with the skills of style although students continue to practice the skills of Invention and Arrangement. These three stages continue to train the students in their ability to utilize and integrate heads of development or enthymemes and examples, that is, the general and the particular in communicating ideas as well as continuing to train them in the use of heads of purpose or modes of argument.

Students will spend the first 4 weeks of class reviewing the previous stages of the Progym, and then will move to Encomium for several weeks, then Invective, Comparison and then Characterization. (Workbooks are $12 each) Instructor will let parents and students know when the new workbook is to be
purchased. Other supplies: 3 ring binder, pencils, paper
